Damage Types
Damage types are a core combat mechanic in Valheim. Enemies and bosses can be resistant, immune, or weak to specific damage types, and matching your weapon to a target’s weakness can massively increase kill speed and survivability. This page covers the main damage types, common sources, and a quick boss weakness reference by biome.
🧾 How resistances work
- Damage types are modified by the target’s resistances.
- **Weak** targets take increased damage.
- **Resistant** targets take reduced damage.
- **Immune** targets take no damage of that type.
- Many enemies have multiple modifiers (for example, resistant to Pierce but weak to Blunt).
- Elemental and Spirit damage are especially important for certain biomes and undead enemies.
⚔️ Physical Damage Types
| Type | What it’s good for | Common sources |
|---|---|---|
| **Slash** | General-purpose damage; effective vs many living enemies | Swords, Axes, Knives |
| **Pierce** | Strong on ranged weapons and spears; good vs many creatures but not all | Bows, Spears, Atgeirs, Crossbows |
| **Blunt** | Excellent vs undead and many swamp enemies | Clubs, Maces, Sledgehammers |
✨ Elemental & Special Damage Types
| Type | What it does | Common sources |
|---|---|---|
| **Fire** | Damage over time effect; strong pressure tool and crowd control | Fire arrows, Staff of Embers, some late-game weapons |
| **Frost** | Slows targets and reduces movement speed; strong control tool | Frost arrows, Staff of Frost, some biome weapons |
| **Poison** | Damage over time; great vs high-health targets that aren’t resistant | Poison arrows, certain weapons and effects |
| **Lightning** | High burst elemental damage (late-game) | Ashlands-tier weapons and effects |
| **Spirit** | Bonus damage vs undead and certain supernatural enemies | Silver weapons, some special items |
🛡 Quick tips for weapon choice
- Carry at least **two** melee options if possible:
* One general-purpose (often Slash or Pierce) * One for counters (often Blunt or Spirit)
- In the Swamp, having a strong **Blunt** weapon is a huge difficulty reducer.
- In late biomes, elemental effects (Fire, Frost, Lightning) become more valuable for control and burst.
