Shields
Shields are a core defensive tool in Valheim. They allow players to block incoming damage and, in many cases, parry enemy attacks for massive stagger damage bonuses. Choosing the right shield type can significantly change your combat style.

🛡 How Blocking Works
When you block:
- Incoming damage is reduced by your **Block Armor**.
- If the damage exceeds your block power, you are staggered.
- Successfully timing a block just before impact triggers a **Parry** (if your shield supports it).
Blocking effectiveness scales with your **Blocking skill**.
⚔️ Parry Mechanics
Bucklers and round shields allow parrying.
A successful parry:
- Greatly increases stagger damage dealt to the enemy.
- Opens a short window for critical melee damage.
- Is one of the strongest combat mechanics in the game.
Tower shields **cannot parry**, but have higher raw block values.
🧱 Shield Types Overview
| Type | Strength | Weakness | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Bucklers** | High parry bonus | Lower base block | Skilled players who rely on timing |
| **Round Shields** | Balanced block + parry | Slightly lower parry bonus than bucklers | General melee builds |
| **Tower Shields** | Very high block armor | No parry ability, slower movement | Tank-style or multiplayer frontline |

⚖ Block vs Movement Speed
- Larger shields typically reduce movement speed.
- Tower shields reduce mobility more significantly.
- Bucklers allow faster repositioning and aggressive play.
Mobility becomes increasingly important in late-game biomes like Mistlands and Ashlands.
🛠 Strategy Tips
- Learn parry timing early — it scales extremely well into late game.
- Carry stamina-focused food if relying heavily on blocking.
- Switch to tower shields in multiplayer if acting as a frontline tank.
- Against bosses, parry windows may vary or be limited.
