Building

From Valheim Wiki

Building

Building is a core survival system in Valheim. Players construct shelters, fortifications, crafting halls, ports, and entire settlements using a structural integrity system that rewards smart design. As you progress through biomes, new materials unlock stronger, more complex structures.

🧭 Quick Navigation

🏗 How Building Works

🪵 The Hammer

All building is done using the Hammer. Structures must be placed within range of a Workbench (or higher-tier crafting station for advanced pieces).

🧱 Structural Integrity

Valheim uses a structural stability system:

  • Pieces must connect to ground or a stable support.
  • Each additional piece away from ground loses integrity.
  • Blue = fully supported
  • Green/Yellow/Orange = decreasing support
  • Red = at risk of breaking

Stronger materials extend build height and durability.

🪵 Building Materials by Tier

Material Biome Tier Durability Notes
Wood Meadows Low Basic early-game walls, floors, roofing
Core Wood Black Forest Medium Allows taller beams and support structures
Stone Swamp High Requires Stonecutter; strong defensive builds
Iron Reinforced Wood Swamp Very High Extends vertical stability dramatically
Darkwood Plains Medium Decorative black structures
Marble Mistlands Very High High durability and ornate designs
Ashwood / Flametal Structures Ashlands Endgame High durability, fire-resistant components

🏠 Essential Structures

🔥 Comfort & Rested Bonus

Building furniture increases your **Comfort Level**, extending the Rested buff duration.

Common comfort items:

Higher comfort = longer stamina and health regeneration bonuses.

🛡 Defensive Building

As raids increase in difficulty, base defenses become essential:

  • Moats and raised earth walls
  • Stakewalls and stone walls
  • Ballistae (Mistlands)
  • Elevated entrances
  • Controlled chokepoints

Ashlands raids in particular require reinforced structures and layered defenses.

🌊 Dock & Portal Design

  • Boats require sheltered dock access
  • Portal networks reduce travel time
  • Portals cannot transport certain metals
  • Use labeled portal hubs for organisation

🛠 Advanced Tips

  • Use iron beams inside stone for hidden support.
  • Combine core wood with stone for tall halls.
  • Always cover crafting stations to prevent weather damage.
  • Raised terrain is stronger than walls for defense.
  • Plan storage rooms near crafting stations for efficiency.
