Workbench

Workbench

The Workbench is the first and most important crafting station in Valheim. It enables basic tool creation, early armor and weapons, building placement, and item repairs. Nearly all early progression depends on placing and upgrading a Workbench.

🔨 Crafting the Workbench

Material Amount
Wood 10

Crafted directly from the build menu using the Hammer.

🛠 What the Workbench Does

  • Crafts early-game tools and weapons
  • Crafts early armor sets
  • Repairs tools and equipment for free
  • Enables placement of most building pieces
  • Defines build radius for structures

Without a Workbench nearby, most building pieces cannot be placed.

⬆ Workbench Upgrades

Each upgrade increases the Workbench level, allowing higher item quality upgrades.

Upgrade Piece Materials Required Effect
Chopping Block Wood 10, Flint 10 +1 Workbench Level
Tanning Rack Wood 10, Flint 15, Deer hide 20 +1 Workbench Level
Adze Fine wood 10, Bronze 3 +1 Workbench Level
Tool Shelf Fine wood 4, Obsidian 4, Iron 2 +1 Workbench Level

Maximum level allows full upgrades for most early and mid-tier equipment.

🏠 Shelter Requirements

To function, the Workbench must:

  • Be covered by a roof tile
  • Have at least partial surrounding walls
  • Not be exposed to rain

If improperly sheltered, it will display the message: “Workbench needs a roof”.

🧱 Building Radius

The Workbench creates a circular build radius. Inside this area you can:

  • Place walls, floors, roofing
  • Repair structures
  • Place crafting stations and furniture

Multiple Workbenches can be placed to expand build coverage.

🛡 Defensive Use

Workbenches prevent enemy spawns within their radius in many cases. Players often place them around bases to reduce raid spawns.

🛠 Strategy Tips

  • Place temporary Workbenches while exploring to repair tools.
  • Keep one near docks for boat repairs.
  • Upgrade early to maximize armor and weapon durability.
  • Use enclosed 2x2 huts for quick portable shelter builds.
