Hammer

The Hammer is the primary building tool in Valheim. It allows players to place structures, craft stations, furniture, and defensive pieces. The Hammer does not deal meaningful combat damage β€” its purpose is construction, repair, and dismantling.

Wood 3
Stone 2

Crafted at a Workbench.

πŸ— What the Hammer Does

When equipped, the Hammer opens the build menu, allowing placement of:

  • Structural pieces (walls, floors, beams, roofing)
  • Crafting stations
  • Furniture and comfort items
  • Defensive structures
  • Decorative elements

It is also used to:

  • Repair structures (no material cost)
  • Dismantle pieces (refunds full materials)

🧱 Building Categories

The Hammer build menu is divided into categories such as:

  • Building
  • Crafting
  • Furniture
  • Misc
  • Defense

Additional building options unlock as you discover new materials.

πŸ”„ Repair & Dismantle

Repair

  • Click damaged structures to restore durability.
  • Repairs cost nothing.
  • Must be within range of the appropriate crafting station.

Dismantle

  • Middle-click (default) to remove a structure.
  • Returns 100% of materials.
  • Useful for redesigning or relocating builds.

πŸ“ Build Radius Rules

Most pieces require:

  • A nearby Workbench
  • Shelter for certain crafting stations
  • Structural support (see Building)

Without a Workbench in range, most pieces cannot be placed.

πŸ›  Strategy Tips

  • Carry a Hammer while exploring to place temporary Workbenches.
  • Use dismantle instead of destroying structures to avoid material loss.
  • Place Workbenches around bases to prevent enemy spawns.
  • Plan support beams early to avoid structural collapse.
