Farming
Farming in Valheim allows players to grow crops, sustain food production, and unlock higher-tier crafting materials. As you progress through biomes, new seeds and cultivation mechanics become available, making farming an important part of mid- and late-game progression.
🌱 How Farming Works
Farming requires the Cultivator, crafted at a Forge.
To grow crops:
- Prepare soil using the Cultivator.
- Plant seeds in cultivated ground.
- Ensure adequate spacing between plants.
- Protect crops from enemy raids.
- Wait for growth (in-game time passes naturally).
Crops will not grow if planted too close together.
🛠 Required Tools
| Tool | Use |
|---|---|
| Cultivator | Tills soil and plants seeds |
| Hoe | Levels terrain and raises ground |
| Forge | Required to craft the Cultivator |
🌾 Crops by Biome
| Crop | Biome Required | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrot | Black Forest | Early food recipes | Grown from carrot seeds found in dungeons |
| Turnip | Swamp | Mid-tier food | Seeds found in swamp |
| Barley | Plains | High-tier food & crafting | Only grows in Plains biome |
| Flax | Plains | Linen thread (crafting) | Only grows in Plains biome |
| Magecap | Mistlands | Magic recipes | Grown in Mistlands terrain |
| Jotun Puffs | Mistlands | Magic food | Mistlands only |
Some crops will only grow in their native biome.
🌬 Wind & Processing
Later progression introduces crop processing:
| Structure | Function |
|---|---|
| Windmill | Converts barley into barley flour |
| Spinning Wheel | Converts flax into linen thread |
These require an Artisan Table.
🛡 Protecting Your Farm
- Use raised earth walls or stakewalls.
- Keep farms inside base perimeter.
- Use Tamed Wolves for defense.
- Place Workbench coverage to reduce spawns.
Raids can easily destroy exposed crops.
📈 Farming Strategy Tips
- Always replant some seeds before consuming crops.
- Spread crops evenly to maximize growth rate.
- Build Plains outposts for barley/flax farming.
- Expand farms gradually to avoid overproduction waste.
- Combine farming with Taming for full food sustainability.
